- they injured themselves, but no intention to self-murder
- usually female > male
- young age (15-25)
- most common method: drug overdose
- associated with low sosioeconomic and unemployed
- also associated with psychiatric d/o (depression, dysthmia, alcohol dependence, personality d/o)
